September 2005 - UV Coating

Without UV coating, your color is unprotected and can appear dark and bland. Applying UV coating not only protects your material, but can add a gloss that makes images and colors pop.

Make your point-of-purchase products and other materials standout with UV coating. The advantages of UV coating include brighter, more vivid colors that make images “pop” off the page, plus a harder finish that provides added protection to your printed materials. UV coating can help keep your products free of scuffs and smudges during transit, and give you an eye-catching advantage over competitors.

At Printers Bindery, we can help you incorporate several UV coating techniques on postcards, event programs, posters, book and magazine covers, point-of-purchase displays, and more. We handle UV coating in-house, saving you both time and money compared to binderies that outsource the process.

Materials tip: UV coating is performed on aqueous-coated 8-pt. stock or thicker. Though it may sound like excessive coating, press-applied aqueous coatings can allow the UV liquid to flow more easily across the sheet and lay more evenly on the substrate.

Production tip: Submitting your project multiple-up to your finisher can save both time and production costs, as Printers Bindery can coat sheets 28” x 40” and larger. When necessary, however, Printers Bindery can work with cut pieces, including most die cut pieces of various shapes, giving you the flexibility to alter a finished piece without a costly reprint.

Planning tip: Ensure a smooth, even appearance by removing press powder prior to application of UV coating. Many printers “dust” printed pieces to facilitate ink curing, but powder and residue on printed material is the enemy of all post press coatings, which can appear gritty if press powder is not removed.
